The league and the NHL Players’ Association announced the new deadline Wednesday.

A Cavalier and a Heat fly into an airport…
Funny things happen in airports. Sometimes, a traveler’s home country is in the throes of a revolution and that traveler is denied entry into the United States, leaving the traveler to live in the airport until everything is sorted out. Sometimes, a family sprints through an airport while “Run, Rudolph, Run” plays on the overhead speakers, leaving the family completely oblivious to the fact that they left their son, Macauley Culkin, at home by himself. And sometimes, a two-time MVP runs into the most outspoken member of the team he left on a one-hour national television special. From Jason Lloyd at the Akron Beacon Journal:Mo Williams’ flight into Cleveland on Sunday was four hours late. Turns out, it was perfect timing. The travel delay allowed Williams to unexpectedly bump into LeBron James at Hopkins airport for a clear-the-air type of discussion between the two former teammates that Williams says was ”much needed.”Williams and James were close during their time together with the Cavaliers, and Williams was one of the players stung the most by James’ departure to the Miami Heat this summer.”Part of me is still sour . . . but I wish him the best,” Williams said Monday between holes at the Cavaliers’ Youth Fund Golf Classic at Westfield Country Club. ”He’s got enough people rooting against him, he doesn’t need one more.” [Photos: More images of LeBron James]Well, that’s awkward. It seems like LeBron has been trying to avoid contact with all of his former Cavalier teammates who are not 7-foot-3 and Lithuanian. For him to accidentally run into the one Cleveland player who has voiced his disappointment in LeBron’s choice was probably one of those heart-skips-a-beat moments where LeBron needed a split-second to compose himself before approaching his former dance partner.Thankfully, Williams appears to have played things pretty cool. He could have been a jerk about it. He could have just ignored LeBron. He could have told him that ground transportation left from an above-ground location when it really left from the basement level. But no, he manned up and let bygones be bygones, Ally McBeal-style. Get him during the season, he had to be thinking. Very cool, Mo Williams, especially considering he just suffered through a four-hour flight delay. That’s poise under pressure, you guys.Maybe, someday, when we look back on this whole LeBron-in-Miami situation, we’ll realize him fortuitously meeting Mo Williams in an airport was the beginning of him mending fences with Cleveland. Now, all he has to do is fly into the same airport millions of times, meet each angry Cavalier fan and hope they’ll be as nice as Mo Williams. Quite the undertaking, but LeBron’s got a few million dollars he can spend on the quest. Other popular stories on Yahoo!
Camp Sunshine! No hard knocks in Jets training camp
Every team is a Super Bowl contender during training camp, at least that’s what the local media in each NFL town seems to think. Puff pieces about teams/players/coaches often read something like, “[Player X] is poised to have a career year because he’s getting over [ailment/personal tragedy/weight issues/immaturity]. He will have a key role in [Team Y] making [playoffs/Super Bowl] after last season’s [surprise/disappointment].” To celebrate the brimming positivity being felt by each of the NFL’s 32 fanbases, this month Shutdown Corner will take a team-by-team look at the flowery and buoyant prose being written by local columnists and writers, and the hopeful quotes of players and coaches in our daily feature, Camp Sunshine. This morning, the New York Jets:That is why Buffalo had nothing to do with it:The offensive coordinator of the Jets and his latest pupil seem like kindred spirits, not friends exactly but men inspired by each other, driven by each other and bonded by a mutual obsession: the finer points of playing quarterback. The coordinator is Brian Schottenheimer. At his core, he remains a quarterbacks coach. One day, he will probably coach an N.F.L. team, but in January he declined to be interviewed for Buffalo’s head coaching vacancy. The major reason? Quarterback Mark Sanchez.– Greg Bishop, The New York Times Out of context quote of the day:Snooki and the gang from ”Jersey Shore?” They’ve got nuthin’ on Gang Green.– Associated PressThat’s Cheeto residue: “I just know what’s going to happen. My crystal ball, I’m seeing a Super Bowl trophy in there. Now, I could be wrong, but that’s what I see. But every time I go to work, that’s what I look at. I’m not embarrassed to say that I believe that will happen. The great thing is we get to prove it soon. That’s the beauty of it.”– Rex Ryan (courtesy NJ.com)This headline cuts to the sunshiny chase:”Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens thinks he’s had a good preseason”– Newark Star-Ledger Peter King says:Mark Brunell’s nickname: “Stetson Man.” Look like a distinguished young Wyoming senator, with salt invading his pepper hair.– Peter King SI.com

Browns linebacker Scott Fujita is not a friend to young kickers
Ah, the plight of the kicker. He kicks a game-winner, and the praise for the victory gets distributed evenly among the quarterback, running back, head coach and defense, while the kicker maaaaaybe gets a mention in the ninth paragraph of the game recap. If he misses that potential game-winner, though, the loss is his, his alone, and he should immediately light himself on fire because he is worthless, as a player and a human being. This is not far off from the viewpoint of Browns linebacker Scott Fujita. Fujita was with the Super Bowl champion Saints last year, and they ended up losing a Week 16 game to Tampa Bay after kicker Garrett Hartley missed from 37 yards. Here’s what Fujita told GQ (gracias, Waiting for Next Year) about how he feels about kickers missing big kicks.“It depends who your kicker is,” said Fujita. ”When I was in Kansas City with Morten Andersen, you didn’t say a word. His track record spoke for itself.” [...]“But last December when I was with New Orleans,” Fujia continued, ”our fat punk kicker, Garrett Hartley, missed a game-winner and we lost for the second week in a row – that was one of the times you want to grab a guy and tell him to [bug ] off. But Hartley was young, and I didn’t want to mess him up for good, so I just bit my lip and said, ‘Hey, man, don’t worry about it – it was a team loss,’ which of course was a total lie.”Fat punk kicker. That’s nice. The same fat punk kicker did go on to kick the Saints into the Super Bowl with a 40-yarder in overtime of the NFC Championship game, so at least he can console himself with that.Oh, and the fat punk kicker still plays for the world champions. Fujita’s in Cleveland. Fujita acknowledges that he’s glad he didn’t verbally assault Hartley, so I say we chalk this up to a good old-fashioned “name-calling is bad” lesson. May any young kickers who ever share a roster with Scott Fujita in the future benefit from this experience.
