OF Gerut retires after 6 MLB seasons (AP)
Outfielder Jody Gerut is retiring after six seasons in the majors. Gerut played for five teams before being invited to the Seattle Mariners’ spring training as a non-roster player this year. He announced his retirement Sunday. The 33-year-old Gerut appeared in 574 games in stints with Cleveland (2003-2005)

Norwegian IOC member recovering from heart surgery (AP)
Senior International Olympic Committee member Gerhard Heiberg is recovering in a Norwegian hospital after suffering a mild heart attack during a ski trip. Heiberg’s secretary Unni Johnsen says the 71-year-old had surgery at Oslo’s Ullevaal Hospital on Thursday. She says he’s “recovering well” and is expected to be released this weekend.
